An official from the Chinese Embassy in Namibia on Thursday called upon Chinese local community to set up a Wildlife Protection Fund in Namibia to sponsor wildlife projects.

Charge d’Affaires ad interim Li Nan said this at a seminar held in Windhoek aimed to raise awareness about wildlife protection, a day ahead of the World Wildlife Day on Friday.

At the event Li said that the embassy would donate 200,000 Namibian dollars (15,200 U.S. dollars) to Namibia’s Environment Ministry to help combat poaching.

“Although we can not get rid of those illegal activities at one kick, we believe some down-to-earth work shall be done right here,” he said.

Furthermore Li said China and Namibia would also work hand-in-hand to combat transnational wildlife criminals with the launch of a joint law-enforcement action, involving Namibian Police and China’s Ministry of Public Security.

Speaking at the event, Deputy Environment Minister Tommy Nambahu said the seminar came at the right time when cases of poaching wildlife are on the increase in Namibia.

“China is our long-time friend and we are calling on all Chinese nationals to come on board in the protection of our wildlife and support our anti-poaching drive,” he added.
