Daniel Krause: An American Artist in China

In 1974 a group of farmers in Xi’an made one of the greatest archeological discoveries of the past century, the Emperor Qin’s Terracotta Army.  The find would come to shape how the world understands Chinese history, culture and art.  This was particularly true for a young high school student in California, Daniel Krause.

Daniel Krause was born in Chicago, before moving to California and eventually studying art at the University of California San Diego.  After completing his studies at UCSD, Daniel heard China calling, and in 1987 he moved to China.  He would go on to study at the Guangzhou Academy for Fine Arts.

Daniel still looks back to the art of old, the hidden ancient sculptures buried in the ground, referring to the discovery as one of the most influential historical works in the world.  However he doesn’t leave these ideas under ground, rather he transforms them in order to retain meaning in today’s contemporary world.

He said to the China Daily that “I put them disordered in my works, to show the fact that historical art can be understood differently by different people in modern society”.

Over the last 30 years Daniel has been living in China he has witnessed a country transformed.  Through the introduction of the economic reforms of Deng Xiaoping and increased globalization in general, China has gone through a massive period of growth.  Mr. Krause has been inspired from that energy, taking the dynamic spirit of the Chinese people and representing it in metal reaching out towards the future.

Since moving to China three decades ago Daniel has become a prominent member of China’s art scene.  In 2008 he had the honor of running with the Olymipic torch in Guangzhou for the Beijing Olympics.  After moving to Beijing in 2011 he became the only non Chinese staff member at the People’s University of China’s Institute of Art.
