In pursuit of fame and fortune, a livestreamer drank to excess each night whatever liquid his followers suggested. He has now achieved some degree of celebrity, in death.

The 29-year-old surnamed Chu from Dalian streamed nightly on the Liaoliao (聊聊) app. During his streams he would drink for the entertainment of his viewers. Mostly, he would drink various forms of alcohol, however, his friend told online news outlet The Paper that once he guzzled from a bottle of cooking oil.

The friend also recalled how Chu had constantly pushed himself to earn more tips. One clip shows him puking, twitching, and saying he can’t go on after drinking while commenters urge him to continue. Chu would take in around 500 or 600 yuan ($74 to $90) a day.

Things kept up like this night after night for three months until December 31st when Chu streamed himself drinking alcohol at a local supermarket. Afterwards, he took a taxi home, but the driver noticed that something was wrong and instead drove Chu to the hospital. Unfortunately, he was declared dead upon arrival.

The Liaoliao app has now shut down its livestreaming services. A notice on its website reads that the app is undergoing “self-examination” in accordance with China’s latest internet cleanup campaign.
