Dude Ate 3 Pounds of Bugs to Win the Lijiang Eating Competition

A brave lad ate nearly 3lb of insects in just five minutes to win a bug-eating contest.

The winning contestant – surnamed Peng – gobbled down no less than 2.7lb of locusts, dragonflies, silkworm pupa and bamboo worms to win a 24-carat gold bullion.

However, the valuable prize for coming first place was nothing compared to being hailed as the "Bug-Eating King".

Peng was perhaps at an unfair advantage as he is from Chongqing, in China – where bugs are considered a delicacy.

He said the worms and locusts were "delicious".

Several women also took part.

One of them even managed 1.1lb of bugs – before stopping because she was "terrified".

Contestants said they wanted to challenge themselves – and they had nothing to fear because experts say the bugs were filled with protein anyway.

The competition, in the city of Lijiang city, in south-western China’s Yunnan province, sought to show off some of the region’s most popular customs, which included traditional dress and a feverish love of fried insects.

The other participants comprised tourists from all over China who had gone to the scenic spot to visit the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.
